Increase Your Comments With BackType Connect

The BackType Connect plugin adds comments made on other blogs, Twitter, FriendFeed, Digg and Reddit to your site i.e. conversations occuring about your posts that were previously ‘invisible’ to readers will become visible, allowing readers to read and reply to them.

The plugin was very easy to install and configure. The comments are shown inline and even work with threaded blogs. It is recommended you change a few of the default options though:

  • ‘Comments summary’ - Turn this off as this links to an external page, rather than an internal page
  • ‘Link to more comments’ - Turn this off as currently it links through to the BackType site rather than to the readers blog.
  • ‘Ignore retweets’ - Turn this on as showing a post has been retweeted is a good thing.

Separate your Comments and Pings in WordPress 2.7

WordPress 2.7 made several improvements to the way comments are handled, including adding threaded comments and pagination. The comments loop was changed as a result, and if you had made changes like separating comments from pings, then your old method no longer worked.

I’ve just setup my free iPhone sites to separate comments from pings using this very clear guide from Sivel. The method isn’t perfect as all pings and trackbacks are not grouped together if you have more than one page of comments, but this is a fault of WordPress 2.7 and not the method.

It’s quick to implement and took me under five minutes.

Well for some reason I’m getting more exposure on Google News than on Google’s main search pages…

For the 3rd time in 2 weeks my free iPhone site has been featured under the News Search term “Free iPhone”.

I guess there aren’t many newsworthy stories with that as a key word, but still, it’s nice to feel important!
