Words with Friends

5

If you have an iPhone then get yourself the best iPhone deal this week – Words with Friends is only $0.99 for the holidays. There is also a free version but the Ads get VERY annoying once you have 5 or 6 different games on the go.

Words with Friends is basically online portable scrabble, and is highly addictive. You can play up to 20 games simultaneously, either with your friends via invites,  or you can use the app to find you a random playing partner.

The rules are as per normal Scrabble, and the game is perfect boring meetings or commutes on public transport. Another great feature is the free messaging section which you can use to send SMS messages to your playing partners free of charge.

Backup your iTunes with CopyTrans TuneSwift – Free here

Anyone reading this blog is likely to have either an iPhone, an iPod, or both – which means that it is very likely that you use iTunes to manage your music. If you are anything like me, you may have up to 20Gb of music tracks sitting in your itunes library on your PC.

Now just imagine what would happen if your PC’s hard drive failed and all the data was lost. Or if you bought a new PC and assumed all of the music and other data was safe because it was on your iPod, then you plug it into a brand new installation of iTunes and watch the synchronisation occur the wrong way, synchronising an empty itunes library to your iPod!

Either way, the result is you lose the lot. And I have known a few people who have experienced this. More >

No I don’t want a new iPad for Christmas

0

Who are all these idiots lining up to buy their loved ones iPads for Christmas? Any fool only needs to do a quick google search to see that a new iPad is due for release next year, with some reports saying the iPad 2 will be released as soon as February!

The safest bet for anyone wanting the latest iPad is to sign up for a free iPad with freebiejeebies, collect the required number of referrals and wait a few weeks until we know for certain when the iPad 2 will be released.

With the usual expected technological advances between 1st and 2nd gen iDevices, we can expect a big upgrade with the iPad 2. Simple things like adding a front facing camera for skype and facetime would be nice and are quite obvious options for Apple. Doubling More >

iPhone 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak

9

Guess what I did when my new iPhone arrived? Yep, I plugged it in to the PC and left it dangling. Along comes a friend who decides to helpfully run the setup for me – and promptly upgrades the OS to 4.2.1.

Not only has this led to poor signal issues (is this a known 4.2.1 issue?) but also means I can only jailbreak using the tethered option.

With the poor signal, comes poor battery life. I think the iPhone is constantly searching for a signal overnight (my room is like a deadzone for mobile reception) and the battery is often dead by the morning, meaning if I use the current 4.2.1 jailbreak I’d need to connect to my PC every morning to turn the iPhone back on. Not really ideal.

So I’m now waiting for the Devteam or whoever to release the untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak, which should be coming in the next More >

Is this the most advanced iPhone App?

0

The latest Free App to hit the newswires is Word Lens. This App uses augmented reality to translate printed text immediately in real time using the iPhone’s camera. Simply pointed the iPhone at soem printed text such as a road sign, menu or brochure and the App will instantly translate the text into another language.

Check out this video of it in action:

Although the app itself is free, it only comes as a demo version that displays reverse text or deleted text. If you want it to translate you need to pay $4.99 for each language add on. Currently only English-Spanish-English is available but the developers promise there will be numerous languages supported in time.

For me, I just appreciate the technology involved in making such an app. Can you imagine telling somebody 5 years ago that this would be possible?

The cost of each language is annoying, but More >
